Doust Page
The family under research is thought to have been originally Of French extraction, and to have been Huguenots. About 1650 they were persecuted by the catholic church and driven from La Rochelle and thereabouts up the French coast, France where they crossed over to Kent and Sussex. The name was then thought to have been spelt ” Doeust “, and families spelling the name this way resided in Kent and Sussex as late as 1756, although most had dropped the “e”, and the name became Doust. About the same period there were families in the same areas who spelt the name as Dowst, but whether they were of the same ancestry I have been unable to establish, how-ever living in close proximity it is quite possible. Among the occupations of the”Dousties ” in those days were farmers, gardeners, florists, foresters, surveyors, chemists, shoemakers, bakers, carriers, business men, and one was recognized as the local quack.
